Hagia Sofia

Fri Sep 16 2005 09:02 MDT #

We visited the Hagia Sofia today, our second day in Istanbul. The picture here is the view looking up into the main dome. The structure in the lower left hand corner is scaffolding. It is an engineering marvel in its own right - it stretches up all the way to the ceiling of the dome. I wonder how they got to the ceiling back in the 6th century when the dome was built? I can't imagine the scaffolding was this nice back then.
